I represent people in Fulton County, Arkansas, in family law, select criminal cases and civil litigation. My office is in Jonesboro, and I handle cases throughout the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit, which includes Cleburne, Fulton, Independence, Izard and Stone counties. Here is what to know about Fulton County cases.
Where Fulton County cases are heard
Fulton County is part of Arkansas’s Sixteenth Judicial Circuit. The circuit court for Fulton County sits in Salem, the county seat. The circuit court hears divorce, custody, adoption, guardianship, orders of protection, felony cases and most civil lawsuits. In contrast, district court generally hears misdemeanors, traffic cases and smaller civil claims. Your paperwork will tell you which court and judge will hear your case.
Orders of protection
An order of protection is a civil court order meant to stop abuse by a family or household member. First, a judge may issue a temporary order right away and set a hearing. A final order can last from 90 days up to 10 years (A.C.A. § 9-15-205), and violating one is a crime (A.C.A. § 5-53-134). Whether you are seeking an order or responding to one, come to the hearing prepared. See my orders of protection page.
Guardianship and adoption
For example, a guardianship gives someone legal authority to care for a child or an incapacitated adult. Adoption creates a permanent parent-child relationship, and Arkansas law spells out who must consent and when a court can excuse consent. Many of these cases involve grandparents, stepparents and other relatives. See my guardianship and adoption pages.
Getting ready for court in Fulton County
Bring every paper you have been served with or given by the court. In addition, gather texts, photos, records and the names of anyone who saw what happened. Arrive early, dress as you would for an important meeting, and don’t discuss your case with the other side in the hallway.
Other cases I handle in Fulton County
Family law is most of my practice: divorce, custody, child support, paternity, guardianship, adoption and orders of protection. I also take a select number of criminal cases, usually difficult matters likely to require a trial, and civil cases such as personal injury, probate litigation and wrongful foreclosure.
